Structuring a discovery interview

A discovery interview is not a survey read aloud. It is a guided conversation that follows the customer’s narrative, with the interviewer directing attention toward areas of interest without steering answers toward predetermined conclusions.

Ask what it costs them when something goes wrong, in time, money, stress, or missed outcomes. Let the customer generate the problem list rather than offering categories and asking them to confirm. When a problem surfaces, probe it: how often does it happen? What do they do when it does? How much does it affect their work?

Current solutions and workarounds (ten minutes). Ask what they are doing today to address the problems they have described. Understanding current solutions reveals what customers have already tried, what works well enough, what is still inadequate, and what they have accepted as unavoidable. Priorities and close (five minutes). Ask how important solving this problem is relative to other things competing for their attention. Analyzing discovery interview findings

Transcribe accurately. Discovery interview data is qualitative and specific. Exact quotes, specific workflow descriptions, and the exact language customers use are the data. Paraphrased summaries lose the specificity that makes findings convincing to stakeholders and actionable for product teams. Identify themes across interviews, not just within them.
